The Tempest
1. The Tempest is often called a fantasy--a work that takes place in an unreal world and features incredible characters. How prevalent is fantasy in popular entertainment today--in movies, television, and books? Do you prefer fantasy to other kinds of entertainment? Discuss.
2. Like all of Shakespeare's works, The Tempest can be set in different times and places and still not lose its appeal. Imagine that you are a movie director, and that you are creating a new version of The Tempest. How would you do it? Who would you cast as Prospero? Miranda? Caliban? Discuss.
I usually tend to dislike fantasty books. However, I like The Tempest. I think the reason for this is the fantasy mixed with a more realstic side. I like that there are normal people and people withpowers and spirtits. This makes the story much more interesting.
ReplyDeleteI would cast Johnny Depp and Caliban. Rachel McAdams as Miranda. Kevin Costner as Prospero, and James Franco as the Prince of course. This would be a good story to make into a modern film.
ReplyDeleteFantasy is very popular today. The Harry Potter series is very famous. The other series i think about is The Twilight Saga. It started the frenzy of vampire novels, movies, and television series. Now there is vampire and werewolves incorporated into tons of things. The appeal of fantasy is to escape from reality. These types of books give people an option for adventure.
ReplyDeleteI am curious as to why Shakespeare always casts the female character as the innocent and completely pure naive one. Except Lady Macbeth, I know she was a strong evil character. But in Othello and now The Tempest the women are always pure and naive and somewhat stupid. Why is this??
ReplyDeleteLauren don't talk about Harry Potter like you dont despise it....
ReplyDeleteI personally find fantasy intriguing. As long as Shakespear isn't writing it. I enjoy reading fantasy because it provides an escape for the thought trodden mind.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love fantasy books because it leaves so much room for creativity with the mind. Authors who write fantasy have so much freedom to create new plots and obstacles. I also like fantasy because DRAGONS!!!!! are fantasy
ReplyDeleteI love most fantasy books especially Harry Potter because they are simply the best books. Fantasy is better because it can offer so much more features that writing about real life cannot. Fantasy allows people to make a point without being really blunt.
ReplyDeleteIf I were creating a modern day Tempest then i would hook up with the directors and writers of south park and go that way with it. Cartman would be caliban. Bebe would be miranda. Stan would be prospero. Kyle would be Ferdinand. Kenny would be something that dies of course.
ReplyDeleteSo far the Tempest is my favorite Shakespeare so far because it's not so dreary and depressing. I like the magic and the humor. I also love the love story even though the love at first sight thing is absolutely ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteSo far the Tempest is my secondn favorite Shakespeare with Othello being last and Macbeth as the first. The tempest just doesn't seem to be as chaotic as i would enjoy. I like stories that are confusing and fast paced.
ReplyDeleteIf I were making a Tempest movie I would set it on an island like the ones in Pirates of the Caribbean. To make it more appealing to audiences I would lesson the magic or make it less like cutesy magic. I would stay really true to the plot because it's hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the love story in the tempest was written by a middle school girl who has a crush on a high school boy and dreams about it. It just seems sooooooooo girly in the love at first sight thing and is just annoying.
ReplyDeleteI think Lauren's idea of Johnny Depp as Caliban is awesome. I would cast Joseph Gordon-Levit as Ferdinand because he is so good-looking. I would have Claire Danes be Miranda and Liam Neelson as Prospero.
ReplyDeleteEnjoying this week's comments/discussion very much! Keep it up!
