Week of January 31-February 4

Brave New World
1. Leisure-time activites were of great importance in the World State. Are Americans filling leisure time intelligently or are we allowing ourselves to be shaped by the media and Big Business?
2. Compare Brave New World with other dystopian novels you have read (1984, Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm). Note the differences in the ways the characters of each novel are kept in complete submission.

  1. We are letting the media and big business shape ourselves. I feel that there are advantages and disadvantages to this. In my leisure time i usually play videogames. I can generate income from playing my videogames and selling stuff on the game. This goes against the code of conduct but everyone does it.

  2. I think Brave New World is very similar to 1984 but less frightening. In 1984 the government has controll of everything possible and basically stalks its citizens. But in Brave New World they society just tries to make people happy which is better but still bad.

  3. I think that it would be easy to begin an underground movement in brave new world. Helmholtz and Bernard cant be the only ones who are aching for more than this life can give. I think that if this really happened there would be a gang of alphas that broke the rules.

  4. I feel the media is affecting society a lot because we shape our idea of beauty off the people on television and rich people. But a positive aspect of the media is people are always informed about what is going on and a lot of television shows are about helping people.

  5. I agree with annie that brave new world is less frightening than 1984. At least in brave new world there is privacy and you have leisure time. In 1984 your everymove is watched and analyzed. You aren't allowed to be human in either of the novels.

  6. I agree that Brave New World would be easier to start an underground movement. A person could act the part of alpha or beta while secretly planning something against the government. In 1984 it was proven to be impossible.

  7. Brave New World is also similar to Farenheit 451 because they are not allowed to read fiction. The level of censorship is similar but more extreme when it comes to the things people enjoy. A big simiarity is that in all three books it was viewed as strange to enjoy a walk.

  8. I think Gattaca provides a more realistic version of brave new world. There are ways to beat the system still and you are allowed to show emotion and feel like a normal person. I legitamately can see gattaca becoming a reality. Genetic engineering is becoming more advanced every day.

  9. Gattaca is awesome! I would not want to live in that world, but I think it is the most realistic. Scientists have started to change genes that cause diseases in babies. Genetic engineering is the closest we are getting to any dystopian societies. If I had to live anywhere though, I would choose Gattaca.

  10. Big media corporations do have an impact of the leisure activities of Americans, but that it a broad generalization. Most of the time people focus of the negative images that Americans portray, like the lack of exercise and reliance on electronics. But one must always remember that there is the alternative population that does not conform to the social norms.
