Week of February 7-11

Wuthering Heights
1. The gothic style of literature was popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It is characterized by gloomy settings and an atmosphere of terror or mystery. Do you think this is a popular style today? Does the gothic style of literature appeal to you as a reader? Discuss.
2. What is a "soulmate?" Do you believe in the concept of soulmates? Do you think everyone has one? Discuss.

  1. The gothic style is definitely coming back. Novels like Twilight are combining dark romances with elements of fantasy or mythology. I like the darkness but not the cookie cutter romance.

  2. a soulmate is somone you were destined for.. i think love is a choice and there is not a specific person but a specific type so i do not believe in soul mates.

  3. I like the dark part but i dont like the romance....romance usually gets in the way of really cool action scenes

  4. The dark gothic style has also become really popular with movies. Films have become much more mysterious and dark. For example Red Riding Hood looks like a dark retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood Story. Gothic style has become really popular with teens.

  5. I don't believe their is a one soulmate in the world for everyone. For every one person in the world there are hundeds of people they could pick to be the "one."

  6. It seems like teens like to have a spooky aspect to movies nowadays. We dont seem to like rainbows and pretty flower settings for movies anymore haha......kinda sad i know

  7. I really think that Lockwood should start carrying hotdogs in his pockets in order to counter the dogs.....maybe if he feeds them enough the dogs will become his friend and he can turn the dogs on heathcliff....pwned

  8. I don't think that hot dogs would be a good method of getting rid of the dogs. The dogs would smell them and attack him before he could throw them away as a distraction.

  9. I wonder how nice the dogs are when you get to know them? i really like dogs and im sure i could tame them and turn them on their master like a sith lord

  10. I'm sure they could tame them but it sounds like Joseph uses them to enforce his Christian ways. I bet Joseph has the dogs tamed.

  11. I am not a hopeless romantic, but I honestly beleive in soul mates. I really don't beleive that a person can tolerate another person in a relationship without some sort of predestination.

  12. Someone could have previously mentioned..but I did not take the time to read the comments. the "Twilight" series as comtemporary literature. If you can call that literature. The Twilight Saga's setting is very gothic. Since it is set in a gloomy and rainy town, that never sees sunlight. Plus the whole vampire vs werewolf thing is slightly dreary.

  13. Well I shall make my own topic!!!! What is your favorite part of Wuthering Heights and what or whom does it remind you of? HMMMMM?!?!

  14. My favorite part of wuthering heights is heathcliff. He is not your average love story dude. He isnt dreamy or anything he is kind of a loser nsty dude. Realistic....haha

  15. I love Wuthering Heights especially the drama between Heathcliff and Catherine. I think it is the best book I've read for school. I love how dark, dramatic, but still romantic it is. :)

  16. For some reason Heathcliff reminds me of Hancock. Hancock isnt your average perfect superhero who is perfect. He has problems so does Heathcliff. They both have 5 oclock shadow too.

  17. My favorite character is by far Heathcliff. I don't know what it is about his cruelty and intensity but it is sexy! He doesn't remind me of anybody I know because I would probably dislike him in real life. For the novel and the movie he is the perfect character.

  18. I disagree with annie. Reading about the drama between Heathcliff and catherine just kind of angers me. If i lived in the society back then i would not be liked because i wouldnt live by those social rules. I would not marry a snobby woman because it was accepted......

  19. Another part of I love of the book is how Cathy and Heathcliff talk about each other. I like how at the beginning they are angry for being separated but they come to accept it. Then they just rub it in Edgar's face that they love each other more than he can imagine being loved by or loving someone.

  20. Annie i never knew you liked the wild kind of man....you continue to surprise me...haha. But i do agree that you wouldnt like him in real life...he would definately smell horrid..... but maybe you are into stench? just kidding but heathcliff is a character you would not like in rael life because of his hygene.

  21. I'm sure that if Heathcliff was in real life he would have adapted modern day style and hygene, Dane. I bet if he was in real life he would be incredibly hot and smell amazing.

  23. I still don't understand how Annie loves Heathcliff so much. He beats his children and his wife..He's really cool.

  24. I do like Heathcliff's character though. He plays the classic bully, after being abused as a child he continues the vicious circle with Hereton. Plus, I don't think he would smell very good..
