December 5-9

Pride and Prejudice

1. What was your favorite "connection" we read in class? Discuss.

2. Mr. Bennett, though troubled and angry over Lydia's behavior, "naturally returned to all his former indolence" and finally allows the family to receive the newlyweds at Longbourn. Do you agree with the relative lack of punishment Lydia receives from her father, or from the other characters, in light of her actions?

3. Identify a dyanmic character from the novel. Explain. Identify a static character from the novel. Explain.

4. Do you like narrative structure that uses letters between characters to reveal information about other characters and advance the action of the plot? Discuss.

  1. Lydia is a spoiled, self centered brat and her family's lack of punishment is enabling her behavior. I am all for letting your kids make mistakes and learn on their own but Lydia's actions affected the entire family. Lydia should have been shunned from her family! No new clothes! It is ridiculous that she causes huge trouble and then returns as if she is the belle of the ball. God. Stupid Lydia.

  2. My favorite connection was the one that was about why Elizabeth Bennet was the "perfect" character-she had a flaw but was interesting. It made me realize why I myself related with the character. I also enjoyed the story a lot more after reading why she loved it.

  3. Lydia. Can. Die. I agree with Dea. She is SUCH a spoiled brat. However, although I hate every bit about her, if it weren't for her ridiculous actions and affair with Mr. Wickham... Darcy and Elizabeth would have never gotten together. Darcy's actions to make the wedding happen gave Elizabeth that extra push she needed to allow herself to fall in love. Stupid Lydia, through your mistakes, you made a happy ending.

  4. While I do think that bad actions deserve punishment in Lydia Bennet's case there was really no way to punish her. She disgraced her family by running away with Wickham however when a child is gone you can't really punish them. If the Bennets were to withhold money then her prospect of marriage could disapppear and leaving another daughter to take care of. So it was almost in a way better that she ran off as she succeeded in getting married and no is not a burden to her family. But don't worry I still hate her!!

  5. If I were Elizabeth, I would have married Mr. Darcy too. Just sayin.

  6. I liked the kissing with your eyes one. It really described Pride and Prejudice and the relationship between Darcy and Lizzy. They didn't need a physical relationship to solidify their love, it just happened.

  7. Still, her parents did not have to give her money for clothes or act like the marriage was a great thing. It isn't fair to the girls who behaved. Also, Darcy paid for the wedding not her parents. Maybe it did give Elizabeth the extra push but Lydia could have potentially ruined things with Darcy.

  8. I still hate Lydia. Like I said, she can jump in a hole and die. However, she had a great addition to the story - every story needs someone to hate.

  9. Yeah, I enjoyed that one too Kyla. An emotional connection is way more real than a physical one. But on the other hand how can you marry someone if you don't even know if you click physically? Like what if you are a bad kissing match.I just think it is weird how you can just go off and marry someone you barely know. You know how you love your best friend but you cannot stand their living habits?

  10. Dea- I agree with your point of view on the punishment but we have to remember that Mrs. Bennet is PSYCHO she only cares about marrying her daughters and that was another step in secureing their future and also Mr. Bennet disagreed with it! Go him!

  11. Hah, good point Emily. Actually, I sorta hated all of the characters at first except Mr. Bennet and Lizzy- all of them were too silly. However, I have added Mr. Bingley, Mr. Darcy and Jane and the Gardiners to my list of likeable characters.

  12. I agree with Kyla. Kissing with your eyes schooled all the other connections. It makes the wedding so much more intimite? Sweet? I cannot think of the word. ROMANTIC! That's the word. Plus, Darcy and Elizabeth totally had that moment. That almost made me cry. Soooooo SWEET! Perfect. Engagement. Picture.

  13. No No No!!!! You guys I have kissed my fair share of young lads and I will tell you that everyone kisses different and some people you don't feel it as much with one person. Not that they are a bad person but there is such a thing as physical chemistry.

  14. I didn't like Jane. She was almost tooo likeable and perfect, everyone has flaws, and I just wasn't too keen on how Jane was portrayed as the perfect child.

  15. Mrs. Bennet is psycho. Maybe that's where three out of her five daughters get it from....

Also, Dea, I always liked Jane because she took Elizabeth's side when she did not accept Mr. Collins proposal.

    That man is weird.....

    ReplyDelete
  16. Jane didn't even try to be perfect though she just was- so that is why I decided to like her. She is boring but isn't annoying to me.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dea. I have never been kissed so I wouldn't know that, would I?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mr. Collins was quite the weird.
And right, that is exactly my point. If you never kissed someone before you have no idea what you are missing out on if you marry a person before you kiss them.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Dea- The thing is though that if you click with another on all the levels then you most likely will have a magical kiss. All the levels that you connect on would form an awesome kiss!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Dea, that is what makes it so magical! You saved your FIRST kiss for your husband! That's SO sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Good point Kyla, but some guys were just meant to be friends. Like you can have a great relationship and feel "mental chemistry" but not physical chemistry.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Mr. Collins is so weird. I am now always referring to him as.... THAT MAN. Only not always in capital letters....

    ReplyDelete
  23. However a great friend could make a good hubby!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dea I kinda agree with your physical click idea but I still believe that the emotional connection is more essential and the way they do not allow the physical attraction get in the way of this by waiting until marriage is a good way of knowing for sure if you really like them for who they are.

    ReplyDelete
  25. True, and I agree that the emotionally should be first and foremost. And yes back then they couldn't "risk" their virtue. But today I do not think you should save your first kiss for your husband.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Dea, I don't think I understand what you mean by "physical chemistry". Could you expatiate?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Kissing is a safe way to explore a physical relationship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can't get pregnant from it :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Not in this day but back then you did I concure!

    ReplyDelete
  29. We aren't saying you have to. Its just so much more romantic when you do.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Physical chemistry as in that warm, fuzzy feeling you get. You know what I mean ;) An empty kiss is probably the worst thing ever.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I disagree again Emily. I don't think it is any less romantic if it is your first kiss or your 1000th.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Kyla, no matter what era, you can't get pregnant from kissing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just think its so much more romantic.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tanner I didn't say you could! I agreed with Dea!

    ReplyDelete
  35. How am I being a syncophant? I haven't tried to flatter anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  36. How is it more romantic?! I don't see how it is any less special. Its about the connection you feel with that person. I think a lot of people have this misconception that the "first time" is the most "special" time.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Syncophant* Sorry TANNER. I just really wanted to use that word, and you used the first big word. Thus, I wasn't worried if it were going to make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I wasn't worried if it was going to make sense**

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1. Emily, your vacuous attempts at invectives will get you nowhere. 2. I heartily agree with Dea, if anything, the first is the most awkward, and personally I don't find it quite as special.

    ReplyDelete
  40. My first kiss was actually really good but it didn't diminish any of my other kisses. The most special kiss was with the boyfriend I felt closest to.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think that depends on the person Dea. Special is different for different people. For me, I think it would be way more special. My idea of my first is different than yours because I haven't had mine.
Tanner, it doesn't have to be awkward. If you love that person before you kiss them, it won't be awkward.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Tanner, stop confusing me with your big words.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yeah it will too be awkward. Because like are nervous and excited and don't really know what to do. You kind of have a fairy tale attitude about it- not that there is anything wrong with that but it isn't realistic.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I would just like to point out this famous quote "You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you meet your prince"

    ReplyDelete
  45. Tanner i do not think you have the right to critize Emily's use of the word sycophant if you mispell it. . . just sayin.

    ReplyDelete
  46. And if you marry the first frog you kiss you will never find the prince.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Its not unrealistic. I have had relatives and friends do it that way. I have friends planning on doing it that way. There are actually really a lot of people doing it that way. They just aren't public about it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Keane, if we are getting all grammatically correct you did not capitalize your "I" therefore, you have no room to talk.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well Keane, she misused the word not misspelled it, the definition and spelling of a word are two different things to . . . critize.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'd like to point out, Kyla and Dea, that you do not HAVE to kiss a lot of frogs. Plus, I'm pretty sure you would know if that "frog" was a prince by the time you were marrying him. Personality has a lot to do with it.
