Wuthering Heights
1. The gothic style of literature was popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It is characterized by gloomy settings and an atmosphere of terror or mystery. Do you think this is a popular style today? Does the gothic style of literature appeal to you as a reader? Discuss.
2. What is a "soulmate?" Look up some of the history of the soulmate belief. Do you believe in the concept of soulmates? Do you think everyone has one? Discuss.
Today the gothic style of literature is still very popular. Books like Twilight and Harry Potter both utilize gloominess and mystery. I myself enjoy mystery novels. I like to think.
ReplyDeleteSoulmates are people who are perfectly suited for one another. The soulmate belief has been alive since the Shakespearean era, when Romeo and Juliet introduced the concept of "star crossed lovers" to the world. I kinda believe in soulmates, but I'm not convinced that everyone has one.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that the gothic style is still popular today as Holden pointed out Twilight and Harry Potter both use that kind of setting and style. I'm not a huge fan of the gothic genre, but I still read it.
ReplyDeleteI used to believe that everyone had one soulmate. As I have gotten older I see it as your soulmate can be anyone. There are billions of people in the world and I'm sure that a person could mesh with more than one person.
ReplyDeleteKyla, I agree to a point. I don't think we can mesh with just anyone, but I believe people have multiple soul mates. I think a soul mate is just a person who completely gets you and brings out the best in you.
ReplyDeleteOn the soul mate point I do believe there is someone for everyone!! I love nerd love. You know what I mean? When you see 2 people who are kinda "weird" but they are super cute together. It is just like aww! They get each other.
ReplyDeleteI didn't mean mesh with just any random person on the street haha. I meant like if you are similar in likes and dislikes I think that you could form a soul matish bond.
ReplyDeleteHm that's an interesting take. I read somewhere that being with your soul mate is too painful because they are a mirror to yourself. What do you think about that?
ReplyDeleteI think gothic literature is still popular because its timeless. Edgar Allen Poe? People still quote his works like crazy, it's great stuff. Plus, our world still has a lot of darkness in it. This is why we have people that are called goths.
ReplyDeleteI totally love the idea of soul mates. Seriously? It gives people hope in my point of view. For those that are like OH MY GOSH NO BODY LOVES ME, if they believe in soul mates, they have hope to find that one person for them. And I personally think that is ADORABLE!
ReplyDeleteDea I could see that, but I disagree also. I think that soul mates are meant to be together, forever. They may like different things maybe even have different personalities. I don't think soul mates are going to be exact mirrors of each other. Because, like me, I couldn't stand living with someone who is like me, because that would be way too predictable. That person, to me, is not my soul mate.
ReplyDeleteI think something else about Gothic literature, I would like to compare it to Gothic buildings. They are also timeless. You don't see a Gothic building and say, "Oh, that was SO eighteenth/nineteenth century." No, you say, "OH MY GOSH!!! THAT IS SO LEGIT!"
ReplyDeleteHmm interesting point Dea. I'm on the fence with that one. I could see being bored with them as they are like you. But you never know if once you dig deeper that you would find a whole new person.. just some thoughts. And Emily I think gothic buildings are SOOO eighteenth/ nineteenth century ;)
