Hamlet
Agree or disagree on the following and discuss:
1. Revenge is sweet. 2. It is wrong to kill another human being for any reason. 3. Hatred is a useless emotion. 4. There is no such thing as pure evil.
To quote my wise older sister Megan "Revenge is a dish best served cold" so in a way we could relate revenge to ice cream which is both a cold and sweet dish.
Revenge is all consuming. I believe it is sweet only for the exact second it is carried through because it is like HA! But that takes so much planing, time and effort- is it worth it?
Right, I think this goes back to the fact that I can't hold a grudge and revenge calls for planning ect. I would still enjoy karma though. For example, smiling when I hear news of a jerk getting a you know what. That stuff gets me through the pain!! Haha:)
After much thought I think so... self defense! War. I am not a huge supporter of war but I am of our American soldiers and they are just doing what they have to do. What do you think?
I agree that killing another person is suitable at times. Not just going on a killing spree, but if your family or yourself was being attacked. I would then see it as suitable to kill another.
I'm with you. We should be supportive of our troops and protection is a justifiable cause to kill another person. But we should be careful that we don't protect ourselves to soon, like in the Trayvon Martin case.
Revenge is not worth it. But it is definitely nice to see somebody who has wronged you get what they deserve. But the planning and stuff just brings you down to their level.
I agree that revenge is sweet within reason, like just a simple prank not ruining someones life. However I agree with Dea in the fact that karma is better.
I believe that hatred is a useless emotion. You spend all that energy and time disliking them. Hating them is so useless, the fact is it takes more energy to spend time hating someone than in does to just ignore them and find something better with your time.
I don't feel that hatred is a useless emotion. I think it can have a negative effect on people but it can fuel passion. It can produce a competitive drive in people.
Trayvon Martin's case is absolutely ridiculous. That man that chased him down did it only because he was black. He could've called it in and left. But he followed him, confronted him, and Trayvon had every right to hit him. This man should never have put himself in that situation at all.
Interesting perspective Kelly. But it could drive you to become obsessed and then you are only harming yourself making it useless if we are defining use as something productive. It could take away from your happiness.
I think competitiveness is a whole different feeling than hatred. Hatred is useless, all it does is make you bitter. Competitiveness can be had between 2 best friends. It just makes you strive to be much better.
There is such a thing as pure evil. Take a look at all the terrorists and people like that. They have no guilt or shame when it comes to killing massive amounts of people, which I view as pure evil.
So maybe if the hate were controlled it would not have a negative effect on someone amd could be useful. And I figured you would have gotten that delicious Reees pie.
This will be my last post, cause I'm hungry so I'm doing the bare minimum, but I agree with you Kyla, there has to be pure evil for people to act the way they do. For someone to try to eliminate an entire race(Hitler) or for someone to force children to kill their parents(Kony) you cannot have a conscience. You'd have to be pure evil.
But hatred doesn't have to make people bitter, some people are able to get over their hate and forgive. While hatred does produce bad it can make people want to be better.
I think what Kelly is trying to say is that hatred can be fuel for good as well as bad. If a person does something vile then realizes the error in their ways, they hate who they've been. Thus using it as fuel to change themselves for the better.
Kelly, if revenge is ice cream, it would be really easy to eat the entire tub. Which, isn't good. Since eating a whole tub of ice cream will probably lead to a brain freeze and pain. It just will come back to haunt you in the end.
When I hear the phrase "killing someone" I don't immediately jump to war or defending my life. I think about sitting there, plotting to murder someone or just randomly killing someone because I can. I think it is wrong to KILL someone always. I think that war and self defense is a whole other concept. I think of that as self defense first, killing second.
Hatred is a pointless emotion. If you hate someone, it just eats away at you. Look at Hamlet, he hated Claudius and it lead to the death of everyone. Minus his friend (who's name escapes me). It just leads to destruction of yourself.
I think there is such a thing as pure evil. I think that although a person may not start evil, evil can develop and take over the entire being. The devil for instance. He was once an angel, and now we have hell. The purest evil of them all.

ReplyDeleteRevenge is all consuming. I believe it is sweet only for the exact second it is carried through because it is like HA! But that takes so much planing, time and effort- is it worth it?
ReplyDeleteKelly- I also thought of the wise Megan Hasquet upon reading that question.
ReplyDeleteI think in some cases revenge is worth it, because if someone has wronged you they should kmnow that what they did is unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteRight, I think this goes back to the fact that I can't hold a grudge and revenge calls for planning ect. I would still enjoy karma though. For example, smiling when I hear news of a jerk getting a you know what. That stuff gets me through the pain!! Haha:)
ReplyDeleteHaha karma is the best revenge. But what about killing another person? Is that a suitable solution if there is a good reason?
ReplyDeleteAfter much thought I think so... self defense! War. I am not a huge supporter of war but I am of our American soldiers and they are just doing what they have to do. What do you think?

ReplyDeleteI agree Chase,I think planning makes you just like them. And Kelly, great point about Trayvon. I think that was very premature and not a time to kill.
ReplyDeleteSorry I had to get a piece of pie that is why I dropped out for a bit.
I don't feel that hatred is a useless emotion. I think it can have a negative effect on people but it can fuel passion. It can produce a competitive drive in people.
ReplyDeleteReeses pie, sweet with out revenge :)

ReplyDeleteKelly that is the EXACT pie I was referring to!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree Chase it could have been prevented but
ReplyDeleteZimmerman acted rashly. It is an example of prejudice and his killing was wrong and unacceptable.

ReplyDeleteIf a person loves though, are they evil?
ReplyDeleteThis pie is far from evil
But hatred doesn't have to make people bitter, some people are able to get over their hate and forgive. While hatred does produce bad it can make people want to be better.
ReplyDeleteKelly I am not following.
ReplyDeleteI think what Kelly is trying to say is that hatred can be fuel for good as well as bad. If a person does something vile then realizes the error in their ways, they hate who they've been. Thus using it as fuel to change themselves for the better.
ReplyDeleteDea- If a person is capable of love I don't think they are wholly evil.
