Time

Discuss how "To His Coy Mistress" and "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time" deal with the pressure and constraints of time. How does Marvell use the words "coy" and "mistress"? Is that different from how we use those words today? Do Marvell's graphic and disturbing images of death help or hurt his argument of seduction? How is Herrick's argument perhaps more sincere than Marvell's?

  1. Time to them is very precious. They think that the only time your beautiful is when you are young and soon the glow will be gone. So you might as well use when you can.

  2. Right, I think that Marvell is using that to manipulate a young maid while Herrick is trying to tell people to live life!

  3. Very good point Kyla. He is using their apprehensiveness towards age against them. It is a very clever strategy for him to get what he wants.

  4. I think the graphic details help him because it makes it seem very impending, and awful and like RIGHT NOW is the only time they have. But it isn't very sexy so in that way it hurts him

  5. Marvell uses coy and mistress veryy differently than we do. To us a mistress is like a shame word but to him it was just a pretty girl.

  6. Marvell uses mistress in a different way than it is today. He is referring to a young lady while in present day it refers to another woman, outside of the marriage.

  8. Yes, the graphic details are not very appealing. They can distract and horrify the girls away from the point he is trying to make.

  9. Herrick's is more sincere by the fact that he isn't trying to persuade some one to have relations with him. He is more trying to say that you should enjoy life as it only happens once, especially when you are young.

  10. But on the other hand it makes death seem sooooo terrible and awful so it sort of scares her into doing "it". hahaha

  11. I agree Dea, if Marvell would have used death and his graphic details in a different way then she may have given in easier and he wouldn't keep having to persuade her.

  12. Herrick is more well meaning. He isn't trying to make people disregard certain values. He is merely encouraging them to live a little.

  13. I think it is funny how guys still totally do the same thing Marvell was! Men....

  14. Yes! He was just more romantic and poetic about it. But now they're just more up front about what they want and trying to get it. Some things just can't be lost over time.
